Types of Air Motor

Piston Air Motor

A Piston Air Motor is a pneumatic motor that converts the pressure energy of compressed air into rotational mechanical energy through the use of pistons and connecting rods. These motors are typically used in applications requiring low speeds and high torque. They Commonly used in mining machinery and as drive motors for conveyors.

Globe Air Motor

Globe Air Motor is renowned for its ruggedness and performance in extreme conditions. These motors are equipped with pneumatic brakes and proportional control valves for precise speed control, Often used in winches, pump drives, offshore operations, and mining.

Vane Air Motor

Vane Air Motor has grooves parallel to the rotation axis, and blades that can slide within these grooves are acted upon by air pressure. Used in various mechanical engineering applications where a compact, lightweight, and reliable motor is needed.

Compact Air Motor

A Compact Air Motor refers to any pneumatic motor designed to be more space-saving while maintaining high performance. These motors often have optimized internal components to fit within a smaller footprint. Suitable for applications where space is limited but high torque and rotational power are required.

Functions of Air Motor

Because they do not require electrical power, air motors can be used in volatile atmospheres.

Air motor torque can be varied simply by regulating pressure.

Air motors generate much less heat than electric motors.

Overloads that exceed stall torque generally cause no harm to air motors. With electric motors, overloads can trip circuit breakers, so an operator must reset them before restarting equipment.

Air motor speed can be regulated through simple flow-control valves instead of expensive and complicated electronic speed controls.

They generally have a higher power density, so a smaller air motor can deliver the same power as its electric counterpart.

Air motors do not need magnetic starters, overload protection, or the host of other support components required by electric motors.

Unlike electric motors, many air motors can operate without the need for auxiliary speed reducers.

Notes On Installing The Air Motor

Before connecting the gas pipe, the pressurized gas should be opened first, and the dust and debris in the pipe should be removed by the pressure of the gas to ensure the cleanliness of the gas pipe.

The inner diameter of the air pipe must be greater than or equal to the diameter of the air inlet of the air motor to ensure the air supply.

Ensure the coaxiality between the output shaft of the air motor and the input shaft of the driver (host).

Air leakage is not allowed at the interface between the air supply pipeline and the pneumatic components to ensure the air supply quality of the air motor.

The exhaust port of the air motor can be installed with a matching muffler, but it cannot be completely blocked, otherwise it will affect the operation of the motor.

For a two-way rotating air motor, when one of the air inlets takes in air, the other air inlet becomes a negative exhaust port, which must not be blocked. It is best to use a three-position four-way valve, otherwise the air motor will not operate normally.

Application Scope of Air Motor

Assembly Line Automation

Air motors are vital for automating assembly line operations, enabling the precise and controlled movement of car parts. They facilitate the tightening of fasteners, enhancing the efficiency of assembly processes.

Powering Pneumatic Tools

Air motors are extensively used to power pneumatic tools, such as impact wrenches, drills, grinders, and sanders. These motors provide the necessary torque and speed for various assembly and finishing tasks.

Conveyor Systems

Air motors drive conveyor belts, facilitating the efficient transportation of car components and finished products along the production line. They ensure smooth and uninterrupted movement, optimizing material flow.

Material Handling

Air motors excel in material handling tasks within car manufacturing facilities. They provide the power required for lifting heavy components and maneuvering materials, improving safety and efficiency.

Paint Booths

Air motors play a pivotal role in car painting applications, powering paint mixers, agitators, and spray guns. They ensure consistent and precise paint application, enhancing the overall quality of the finished product.

Engine Testing

Air motors are crucial for testing car engines during the manufacturing phase. They simulate engine loads and stresses, enabling evaluation of performance and durability. Air motors provide precise and repeatable torque levels for accurate testing.

FAQ

Q: What are the applications of air motor?

A: Compressed air motors are an ideal solution for a variety of applications, even in extremely different areas such as mechanical engineering, automotive industry, packaging, paper or printing industry, petrochemical industry, agricultural equipment, the food industry, and many other applications.

Q: What is the efficiency of the air motor?

A: Efficiency of an air motor is defined as the ratio of the actual power output to the theoretical power available from the compressed air for the expansion ratio at which the machine is operating. Turbines convert pneumatic power to mechanical power at about 65% to 75% efficiency.

Q: What is the speed of air motor?

A: The free speed of a motor is typically around 20 000 rpm. For most applications these speeds are too high and the rotor torque is also rather small. To convert a high speed and low torque to lower speed and higher torque, gears are used.

Q: Are electric motors less efficient than air motors?

A: Electric motors are more efficient than air motors. An electric motor provides air pressure directly to the sealed motor box. An air motor relies on external air compression that travels to the motor box.

Q: How do you control the speed of an air motor?

A: Most air motor applications will need a speed control valve to set the speed while the motor is running under load. The key to improve starting torque is to place the speed control in the motor outlet, or in a meter-out mode on reversible air motors.

Q: How do you size an air motor?

A: Air motors are usually sized by their horsepower at rated input air supply, usually in the range between 80 and 90 psig. Then this air consumption is used to size the valving and the compressor.

Q: How does the starting air motor work?

A: Air motor start – Compressed air is used to drive an air motor, which is connected to the engine flywheel. Compressed air flows through the motor, causing the motor shaft to turn, which in-turn drives the flywheel and consequently the engine crankshaft.
